But as the dirty men approached the table caught sight of the Krausmeyer, they fell back. Some of them mumbled & Debbie heard 'Hymie' in the mist of the controlled arguing. Slowly the men placed the food back on the plates and turned to leave. That was when the understanding dawned on Debbie. "Hymie, do you know these men?" she asked. The little man stared at the ground and remained motionless. By that lack of denial, Debbie received the whole picture. Hymie must have been one of them? she thought. They were going to take the food but when they recognized Hymie they stopped. But why? Debbie looked into the Krausmeyer's lowered eyes and found shame, embarrassment . And she knew it was not from his being where he was, but from his not helping his former companions. And the men in turn were embarrassed for trying to steal from one of their own who had made it out of the hills - from living like an animal.
